With Vince Young being run out of the Titans’ facility it makes you think that his time might be done in Tennessee. Jeff Fisher has a low tolerance threshold and VY may have officially worn out his welcome. This is too bad for a guy who was the golden boy, the next great franchise QB.
Everything was slanted in his favor. NFL offenses were adjusting to the influx of mobile quarterbacks, the Titans owner Bud Adams had a huge man-crush on him and he was joining an already pretty good team. Anyone who saw him play in the 2005 BCS championship game knows that VY has amazing potential. He effortlessly ran it in from nine yards out to win the game making the USC defenders look like Prince Fielder trying to beat the throw for an infield single (not going to happen).
But that was almost 6 years ago, that is enough time for Greg Oden to have three more knee surgeries, Pacman Jones to get arrested 7 more times and Nicolas Cage to make 5 more bad movies (and maybe one good one). It is an eternity in the world of professional sports and it is starting to look like VY’s “prime” was his rookie year.
Sources close to the situation have said that Vince lacks the basic coping skills to handle adversity and that is at the root of his tantrums. That’s fine, don’t handle your adversity, and don’t go to counseling. It is much more manly to throw tantrums and lose your starting job. Lay on your back kicking and screaming while your football career passes you by. I hope VY gets this figured out, gets the help he needs and has a Robert Downy Jr.-esque revival. It may happen, it just doesn’t seem like it will be on a Jeff Fisher coached team. Vince needs a coach who will have some faith in him. Right now Jeff Fisher trusts Vince as much as Elin trusts Tiger.
I do give Vince some credit for apologizing to Jeff Fisher, but over text message is the wrong way to go about it. It shows that he can say the right things but his actions (texting instead of face to face) show his inability to take on any adversity or to take heat for his decisions. I imagine the text went something like this:
VY: OMG! Sorry 4 leaving and stuff I said…idk y I did that, I <3 playing for the titans. plz tell the team gl w/season…if u trust me we can win the SB…thx
JF: lol…we are shopping you…start packing asap.
It is not like he lacked mentors or that there weren’t any good examples of how to make it in the NFL. His former teammate Steve McNair was a great example of how to handle your business on the field. And he didn’t have to look any further than Michael Vick to learn how to overcome adversity or how to work his tail off, it just seems he isn’t paying attention. Again, he knows what to say; he just doesn’t know what to do. He talks about being in the HOF and he talks about winning Super Bowls and he says it like he is going to prove everyone wrong. Well here it is Vince, everyone says you are immature and whiney, prove us all wrong.
